After a long day of mama-ing, I look forward to sinking into a bath with a glass of wine, some bubbles, and bath salts. Using bath salts with essential oils help soothe sore muscles, relax your mind, and calm you for a restful night’s sleep. It can also help to improve your skin, cheer up unhappy babies, wake you up, or open up your airways. That’s the great thing about essential oils– they’re good for practically everything!
But oil and water don’t mix!
True, but there’s a trick to making the oils disperse into the water. Chemically, oil and water don’t mix, r
ight? Soap, though, attaches to both water AND oil molecules, which makes it the perfect carrier for using essential oils in your bath. Just take a cup of epsom salts, a tablespoon or two of your favorite soap (I like Dr. Bronner’s baby unscented, personally), and a few drops of your essential oil of choice. It’s seriously that easy to have bath salts with essential oils to make your bath that much better!
Why epsom salts?
Epsom salts (aka MgSO4 or Magnesium Sulfate… Woah chemistry!) have some amazing benefits for your body all on their own, which makes them perfect for dumping in your or your kiddo’s bath. Magnesium helps to ease stress, improve sleep, regulate over 300 enzymes in your body, and it relieves muscle discomfort by helping muscles and nerves to function the way they’re supposed to. The sulfate part of MgSO4 flushes toxins out of your body (add in some lemon water for a gentle cleanse of your whole body!), helps eas
e head tension or joint discomfort, and can also increase your body’s absorption of the nutrients you’re already eating every day.
Bath salts with essential oils sounds great,
but which essential oils do I use?
That depends! What kind of bath do you want?
If you want it to…
- Be invigorating– use Wild Orange, Invigorating Blend, Peppermint, Grapefruit
- Soothe your muscles– use Soothing Blend, Marjoram
- Soothe your skin– use Lavender, Melaleuca
- Give you better skin– use Melaleuca, Frankincense, Lavender, Helichrysum
- Make babies happier– use Lavender, Uplifting Blend, Joyful Blend
- Relax you– use Lavender, Restful Blend, Reassuring Blend, Ylang Ylang
- Open up your airways– use Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Breathe Blend
- Calm tension– use Tension blend, Peppermint, Soothing Blend
Bath salts with essential oils are so diverse that there’s almost no way to list every option you have, but that’s part of the fun, too. Play with them, see what blends you like best, and then make them exactly the way YOU like it, not the way Bath and Body Works does!
